What Is an Arm Lift?

Arm lift surgery, also known as brachioplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms while tightening and reshaping the remaining tissue to create smoother, firmer, and more proportionate arm contours. Depending on your anatomy, liposuction may also be performed to further refine the upper arms and improve the final contour.

Loose upper-arm skin commonly develops after significant weight loss or as part of the natural aging process as skin elasticity gradually declines. While diet and exercise can strengthen the underlying muscles, they cannot remove excess skin. An arm lift addresses these concerns while restoring a more toned, youthful arm contour.

Benefits of an Arm Lift

An arm lift does more than remove loose skin. When thoughtfully planned, it can improve arm contour, restore proportion, and enhance overall balance. Common benefits include:

  • Smoother, firmer upper arms that appear more toned
  • Removal of loose, hanging skin
  • Reduction of excess upper-arm fat when appropriate
  • Better proportion between the arms and body
  • Improved confidence wearing sleeveless clothing and more fitted styles
  • Beautiful, natural-looking results designed to complement your body

Are You a Candidate for an Arm Lift?

A consultation is the best way to determine whether an arm lift is right for you. Many patients are good candidates if they:

  • Have loose or sagging upper-arm skin
  • Have experienced significant weight loss or age-related skin laxity
  • Are at or near a stable weight
  • Are in good overall health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • Have toned the underlying muscles with diet and exercise but continue to have excess upper-arm skin
  • Have realistic expectations about surgery, recovery, and scarring

Why Choose Dr. Sepideh Saber?

Every brachioplasty procedure should be tailored to the individual, making experience, surgical judgment, and thoughtful planning essential to achieving an excellent result.

Dr. Saber is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Her education and training include Stanford University, the University of Southern California, and NYU Langone Health, providing a strong foundation in both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery.

Her approach is never one size fits all. Every recommendation, from incision placement and contouring strategy to whether liposuction should be combined with brachioplasty, begins with an unhurried consultation to understand what you hope to achieve, followed by a careful evaluation of your anatomy, skin quality, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Every procedure is designed to create smooth transitions, balanced proportions, and natural-looking arm contours that complement the rest of your body. The goal is always the same: to create results that look beautiful, natural, and proportionate to your body.

  • Recommendations for any preoperative testing when appropriate
  • Personalized pricing based on your individualized surgical plan

Procedure

Arm lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation in our QUAD A-accredited surgical suite. Based on your anatomy and treatment goals, excess fat is removed directly or with liposuction when appropriate, excess skin is removed, and the remaining tissues are carefully tightened to restore a smoother, firmer arm contour. Every incision is carefully closed to promote optimal healing and help minimize visible scarring.

Recovery and Results

Most patients return to light daily activities within one to two weeks, depending on the extent of surgery. Temporary swelling, bruising, soreness, and tightness are expected and gradually improve over time. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Saber determines that healing is progressing appropriately. Compression garments are worn during the early healing period to help reduce swelling and support the new contours. Although noticeable improvement is seen within the first several weeks, scars continue to mature and the final contours gradually become more refined over the following months.

Types of Arm Lift

The most appropriate arm lift depends on the amount and location of excess skin and your treatment goals. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will recommend the technique that best addresses your concerns.

Mini Arm Lift

Removes a small amount of excess skin near the armpit and is best suited for patients with mild upper-arm skin laxity.

Standard Arm Lift

Removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm through an incision that typically extends along the length of the upper arm and is carefully positioned to make the resulting scar as inconspicuous as possible. This is the most commonly performed technique.

Extended Arm Lift

Removes additional excess skin and fat from the upper arm while extending the incision into the armpit and lateral chest when more extensive tissue removal is needed, most commonly after significant weight loss.

Related Procedures

Many patients choose to combine an arm lift with other body contouring procedures to further enhance their results. Liposuction is frequently performed at the same time to further refine the upper arms and improve overall contour. In selected patients, the arm lift incision may be extended into the armpit and lateral chest to remove additional excess skin and improve overall contour. An arm lift may also be combined with breast surgery, tummy tuck surgery, or other body contouring procedures as part of a comprehensive post-weight-loss or body contouring plan. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will discuss whether combining procedures is safe and appropriate for your goals.

Arm Lift FAQs

Face of a woman

Where will my arm lift scar be?

The scar typically runs along the upper arm, where it is positioned as inconspicuously as possible. Its length and exact location depend on the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed and your individualized surgical plan.

Will my arm lift scars fade over time?

Scars are more visible early on and gradually fade over the first year as they mature. Following Dr. Saber's scar-care recommendations can help optimize healing and improve their appearance.

Can liposuction replace an arm lift?

Liposuction is best suited for patients with good skin elasticity and minimal loose skin. When excess or sagging skin is the primary concern, an arm lift is usually needed to achieve the best result.

Can an arm lift be combined with liposuction?

Yes. Liposuction is frequently combined with brachioplasty to remove excess fat and further refine the contour of the upper arms. Depending on your anatomy and treatment goals, combining these procedures can create a smoother, more balanced result. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will determine whether this approach is appropriate for you.

Will my results last?

Arm lift results are long lasting when supported by a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Significant weight fluctuations and the natural aging process can gradually affect your arm contours over time.

How long before I can lift my arms normally?

Range of motion returns gradually during the first several weeks of healing. Dr. Saber will guide you on when it is safe to resume reaching, lifting, and other normal arm activities.

Is an arm lift painful?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and soreness after surgery, which are generally well managed with prescribed medication. Recovery is often easier than many patients anticipate.

When can I return to the gym?

Light walking is encouraged early to aid circulation. Upper-body exercise, heavy lifting, and other strenuous activities should be avoided until Dr. Saber determines that healing is progressing appropriately, which is typically after several weeks.

Should I reach my goal weight before an arm lift?

Yes. Being at or near your goal weight helps produce the best, longest-lasting results. Significant weight loss after surgery can lead to the development of new loose skin.
