What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a customized combination of procedures designed to restore or enhance body contour. Although commonly performed after pregnancy and childbirth, it is also an excellent option for patients following significant weight loss, age-related body changes, or those who simply desire improvement in multiple areas. Treatment plans are individualized and may include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, fat transfer, or other body contouring procedures based on your anatomy and goals.

Pregnancy, weight loss, aging, and genetics can all contribute to stretched abdominal muscles, excess skin, changes in breast shape and volume, and areas of stubborn fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. By combining complementary procedures into a single surgical plan, a Mommy Makeover addresses multiple concerns while allowing for a single recovery period.

Benefits of a Mommy Makeover

A Mommy Makeover does more than improve one area of the body. When thoughtfully planned, it can restore proportion, improve body contour, and create balanced, natural-looking results. Common benefits include:

  • A flatter, firmer abdomen, including repair of separated abdominal muscles when appropriate
  • Removal of excess abdominal skin
  • Restored breast shape, position, and volume
  • Improved waistline and body contour
  • Reduction of stubborn fat with liposuction
  • A single surgery and recovery period
  • Beautiful, natural-looking results designed to complement your body

Are You a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

A consultation is the best way to determine whether a Mommy Makeover is right for you. Many patients are good candidates if they:

  • Are not planning pregnancy in the near future
  • Have completed breastfeeding if breast surgery is planned
  • Are at or near a stable weight
  • Have loose abdominal skin, muscle separation, breast changes, stubborn fat, or other body contour concerns following pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or genetics
  • Are in good overall health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about surgery, recovery, and scarring
  • Can dedicate adequate time to recovery

Procedure

Mommy Makeover surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our QUAD A-accredited surgical suite. Depending on your individualized treatment plan, surgery may include abdominal muscle repair, removal of excess skin with a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, fat transfer, or a combination of procedures. Every surgical plan is customized to restore balance while promoting beautiful, natural-looking results.

Recovery and Results

Recovery varies depending on the procedures performed, but most patients return to light daily activities within approximately two weeks. Temporary soreness, swelling, and tightness are expected and are managed with prescribed medication. Compression garments are typically worn during the early healing period, and heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and lifting young children should be avoided until Dr. Saber determines that healing is progressing appropriately. Although much of the swelling improves during the first several weeks, the final results continue to develop over the following months as the tissues soften and scars mature.

Procedures Commonly Included

Every Mommy Makeover is unique. Depending on your goals, your surgical plan may include:

  • Tummy tuck to repair abdominal muscle separation and remove excess skin
  • Breast augmentation to restore lost volume
  • Breast lift to restore a more youthful breast position
  • Breast reduction to reduce breast size while restoring shape
  • Liposuction to improve body contour and waist definition
  • Fat transfer to the breasts, hips, buttocks, or other areas, when appropriate, to improve contour and proportion

Related Procedures

Many patients choose to combine a Mommy Makeover with additional body contouring procedures to further enhance their results. Depending on your anatomy and goals, additional liposuction, fat transfer, or other body contouring procedures may also be appropriate. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will discuss whether combining procedures is safe and appropriate for your goals.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

Can all of my procedures be performed during one surgery?

Many Mommy Makeover procedures can safely be combined during a single operation. Whether this is appropriate depends on your overall health, the procedures being performed, and the anticipated length of surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will determine whether combining procedures is the safest approach or whether staging surgery would provide a better outcome.

How long should I wait after pregnancy before having a Mommy Makeover?

Most patients should wait at least six months after giving birth before undergoing procedures such as a tummy tuck to allow the uterus and abdominal tissues to recover. If breast surgery is planned, patients should also wait at least six months after completing breastfeeding, as surgery performed too soon may affect healing and can occasionally stimulate milk production. Dr. Saber will evaluate your recovery, weight stability, and overall health to determine the safest timing for surgery.

Will I need help at home during recovery?

Yes. Because lifting restrictions are necessary during the early healing period, especially after a tummy tuck, arranging help with young children, household responsibilities, and daily activities is strongly recommended.

Is it better to wait until I am finished having children?

Future pregnancies can stretch the abdominal muscles and skin and alter the breasts, which may reduce some of the long-term benefits of your surgery. For this reason, many patients choose to wait until their family is complete. However, every situation is different. Patients who are not planning pregnancy in the near future may still be excellent candidates. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will discuss your future family plans and help determine the best timing for surgery.

How much time should I take off work?

Recovery depends on the procedures performed and the physical demands of your job. Many patients return to desk-based work within two to three weeks, while more physically demanding occupations may require additional recovery time.

Will my scars be noticeable?

Mommy Makeover procedures require incisions, and some scarring is unavoidable. Dr. Saber carefully places incisions where they can be concealed as much as possible, and most scars fade significantly over the first year as they mature.

How long do Mommy Makeover results last?

Mommy Makeover results are long lasting when supported by a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Over time, the natural aging process, future pregnancy, and significant weight fluctuations may affect your results.
