Refined Results in a Setting Built for Safety

Breast reduction is more than simply making the breasts smaller. It requires thoughtful planning, precise technique, and an artistic approach to creating breasts that are lighter, beautifully contoured, and proportionate to your body.

Dr. Sepideh Saber, MD, FACS, is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs every procedure in our on-site, QUAD A-accredited Mission Viejo surgical facility. QUAD A accreditation reflects rigorous standards for patient safety, anesthesia, sterile technique, equipment, and facility oversight. What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, reduces breast size by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin while reshaping the remaining breast tissue to create breasts that are smaller, lighter, firmer, and more proportionate. A breast reduction naturally includes a breast lift, allowing the nipple and areola to be repositioned to a more youthful position while improving overall breast shape and contour.

Some patients seek breast reduction because of neck, back, or shoulder discomfort, while others simply desire breasts that better fit their frame and lifestyle. Large breasts may also make exercise more difficult, limit clothing choices, or contribute to breast asymmetry. Breast reduction addresses these concerns while creating a more balanced, youthful breast shape.

Benefits of Breast Reduction

Breast reduction does more than reduce breast size. When thoughtfully planned, it can improve comfort, restore proportion, and enhance overall balance. Common benefits include:

  •  Smaller, lighter breasts that better fit your frame
  • A more youthful, lifted breast contour
  • Improved breast shape and symmetry
  • Better proportion to the rest of your body
  • Improved comfort during exercise and everyday activities
  • Relief from neck, back, and shoulder discomfort
  • Reduced skin irritation and bra strap grooving
  • Clothing that fits more comfortably
  • Beautiful, natural-looking results designed to complement your body

Are You a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

A consultation is the best way to determine whether breast reduction is right for you. Many patients are good candidates if they:

  • Feel their breasts are disproportionately large for their frame
  • Experience neck, back, or shoulder discomfort related to breast size
  • Have skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts
  • Find that large breasts interfere with exercise, clothing choices, or everyday activities
  • Are in good overall health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • Are at or near a stable weight
  • Have realistic expectations about surgery, recovery, and scarring

Procedure Steps

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation in our QUAD A-accredited surgical suite. Based on your anatomy and treatment goals, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed, the breasts are reshaped, and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful position. Every incision is carefully closed to promote optimal healing and help minimize visible scarring.

Recovery and Results Timeline

Most patients return to light daily activities within one to two weeks. Temporary soreness, swelling, and tightness are expected and managed with prescribed medication. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Saber determines that healing is progressing appropriately. Although much of the swelling improves during the first several weeks, the breasts continue to settle as scars mature and the final shape develops over the following months.

Related Procedures

Many patients combine breast reduction with complementary procedures to achieve their desired result. Because breast reduction naturally includes a breast lift, the breasts are reshaped and lifted while excess tissue is removed. Liposuction of the lateral chest or underarm area may also be recommended, when appropriate, to further improve contour and overall balance.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Is breast reduction covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage for breast reduction depends on your individual insurance plan and whether you meet your carrier's medical necessity criteria, which are often quite strict. Requirements may include documented symptoms, failure of conservative treatment, and removal of a minimum amount of breast tissue based on your body size. Because Orange County Surgical Specialists focuses on cosmetic surgery, we do not accept insurance for breast reduction procedures. During your consultation, you will receive a personalized treatment plan and transparent self-pay pricing.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast reduction?

Most women are able to breastfeed after breast reduction, although it cannot be guaranteed. If future breastfeeding is important to you, Dr. Saber will take this into consideration when planning your procedure.

How much smaller will my breasts be?

The amount of tissue removed depends on your anatomy, body proportions, symptoms, and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will recommend a breast size that relieves discomfort while maintaining balanced, natural-looking proportions.

Will my breasts become larger again after surgery?

Pregnancy, significant weight gain, and hormonal changes may affect breast size over time. Maintaining a stable weight can help preserve your long-term results.

How visible are breast reduction scars?

Breast reduction does require incisions, and some scarring is unavoidable. Dr. Saber carefully places incisions where they can be concealed as much as possible, and most scars fade significantly over the first year as they mature.

Will my nipple sensation change?

Temporary changes in nipple sensation are common after breast reduction surgery. For most patients, sensation gradually improves over the weeks to months following surgery, although permanent changes are possible.

When can I return to work?

Many patients return to desk-based work within one to two weeks. Jobs involving heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity typically require a longer recovery period before returning safely.

Can breast reduction be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Breast reduction naturally includes a breast lift, allowing the breasts to be reduced in size while restoring a more youthful breast shape and position. It may also be combined with other procedures when appropriate. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will discuss whether combining procedures is safe and appropriate for your goals.
