A tummy tuck is more than simply removing excess skin. It requires thoughtful planning, technical precision, and an artistic approach to restoring natural abdominal contour while preserving balanced body proportions.

Dr. Sepideh Saber, MD, FACS, is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs every procedure in our on-site, QUAD A-accredited Mission Viejo surgical facility. What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess abdominal skin and fat while repairing separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) when present. The procedure creates a flatter, firmer abdomen and restores a smoother, more youthful abdominal contour.

Pregnancy, significant weight loss, aging, and changes in weight can stretch the abdominal muscles and skin beyond what diet and exercise can correct. During surgery, excess skin is removed, the abdominal muscles are repaired when appropriate, and the remaining tissues are tightened to improve abdominal contour. Depending on your anatomy and treatment goals, Dr. Saber may recommend a mini tummy tuck, full tummy tuck, extended tummy tuck, or, for select patients, more specialized procedures such as a Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck, circumferential body lift, reverse tummy tuck, or panniculectomy. She will recommend the technique that best addresses your anatomy and goals.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck does more than remove excess skin. When thoughtfully planned, it can restore abdominal contour, improve proportion, and create a firmer, more sculpted midsection. Common benefits include:

  • A flatter, firmer abdomen
  • Repair of separated abdominal muscles when appropriate
  • Removal of loose, excess abdominal skin
  • Improved waistline and abdominal contour
  • Improved contour of the mons pubis (the soft tissue above the pubic area) when appropriate
  • Reduction of stretch marks on skin removed during surgery, when possible
  • Clothing that fits more comfortably
  • Beautiful, natural-looking results designed to complement your body

Are You a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

A consultation is the best way to determine whether a tummy tuck is right for you. Many patients are good candidates if they:

  • Have loose abdominal skin or separated abdominal muscles
  • Are bothered by abdominal contour changes following pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or changes in weight
  • Are at or near a stable weight
  • Are in good overall health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about surgery, recovery, and scarring
  • Understand that future pregnancy or significant weight fluctuations may affect long-term results

Why Choose Dr. Sepideh Saber?

Every tummy tuck should be tailored to the individual, making experience, surgical judgment, and thoughtful planning essential to achieving an excellent result.

Dr. Saber is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Her education and training include Stanford University, the University of Southern California, and NYU Langone Health, providing a strong foundation in both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery.

Her approach is never one size fits all. Every recommendation, from incision placement and abdominal muscle repair to contouring techniques and overall body balance, begins with an unhurried consultation to understand what you hope to achieve, followed by a careful evaluation of your anatomy, skin quality, lifestyle, and long-term goals. The goal is always the same: to create results that look beautiful, natural, and proportionate to your body.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery

  • A private discussion of your goals, abdominal contour, skin quality, muscle separation, body proportions, and areas of concern
  • A comprehensive physical examination and individualized surgical recommendations
  • An opportunity to discuss the most appropriate tummy tuck technique for your anatomy, expected results, recovery, and anticipated outcome
  • Discussion of the surgical procedure, expected recovery, potential risks, and benefits
  • Recommendations for any preoperative testing or imaging when appropriate
  • Personalized pricing based on your individualized surgical plan and anticipated surgical time

Procedure

Tummy tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation in our QUAD A-accredited surgical suite. Based on your anatomy and treatment goals, excess abdominal skin and fat are removed, separated abdominal muscles are repaired when appropriate, and the remaining tissues are carefully tightened to restore a flatter abdominal contour. Because excess fat around the abdomen and waist can limit the final contour, liposuction of the abdomen and flanks is frequently performed to create a smoother transition and enhance overall body contour. Depending on your anatomy, liposuction of the mons pubis (the soft tissue above the pubic area), bra roll, or other adjacent areas may also be recommended to further improve balance and proportion. Every incision is carefully closed to promote optimal healing and help minimize visible scarring.

Recovery and Results

Most patients return to light daily activities within approximately two weeks. Temporary soreness, swelling, tightness, and a feeling of abdominal tension are expected and managed with prescribed medication. Compression garments are worn during the early healing period, and temporary surgical drains may be used when appropriate. Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and lifting young children should be avoided until Dr. Saber determines that healing is progressing appropriately. Although much of the swelling improves during the first several weeks, the abdomen continues to soften and the final contour develops over the following months as the tissues heal and scars mature.

Types of Tummy Tuck

The most appropriate tummy tuck depends on your anatomy and treatment goals. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will recommend the technique that best addresses your concerns.

  • Mini tummy tuck: Removes excess skin below the belly button and is best suited for patients whose excess skin is confined to the lower abdomen.
  • Full tummy tuck: Repairs separated abdominal muscles and removes excess skin above and below the belly button for comprehensive abdominal rejuvenation.
  • Extended tummy tuck: Removes additional excess skin extending onto the flanks and is often recommended following significant weight loss.

For select patients, more specialized procedures such as a Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck, circumferential body lift, reverse tummy tuck, or panniculectomy may be the most appropriate option. Dr. Saber will recommend the technique that best suits your anatomy and goals.

Related Procedures

Many patients choose to combine a tummy tuck with other body contouring procedures to further enhance their results. Liposuction is frequently combined with tummy tuck surgery to refine the abdomen, waistline, flanks, and surrounding contours, creating a more balanced and harmonious result. A tummy tuck is also frequently combined with breast surgery as part of a Mommy Makeover. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will discuss whether combining procedures is safe and appropriate for your goals.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Face of a woman

Will a tummy tuck leave noticeable scars?

A tummy tuck does require incisions, and some scarring is unavoidable. Dr. Saber carefully places incisions low on the abdomen where they can usually be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear, and most scars fade significantly over the first year as they mature.

What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

Liposuction removes excess fat but does not remove loose skin or repair separated abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck addresses excess skin and muscle separation while also improving abdominal contour. Many patients benefit from combining both procedures to achieve the most balanced result.

When will I be able to stand up straight?

Most patients gradually stand more upright over the first one to two weeks as the abdominal tissues heal and tightness improves. Walking frequently during recovery is encouraged and promotes healing.

Can I become pregnant after a tummy tuck?

Yes. A tummy tuck does not affect your ability to become pregnant. However, pregnancy can stretch the repaired abdominal muscles and skin, which may affect your long-term results. For this reason, many patients choose to undergo tummy tuck surgery after they have finished having children, although this is a personal decision that can be discussed during your consultation.

Will a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?

A tummy tuck removes stretch marks located on the skin that is excised, which is typically below the belly button. Stretch marks outside the area of skin removal will remain, although they may be repositioned lower on the abdomen.

When can I drive again?

Most patients may resume driving once they are no longer taking prescription pain medication, can comfortably sit behind the wheel, and can safely perform emergency braking. This is commonly around two weeks after surgery but varies between patients.

Is a tummy tuck painful?

Most patients experience moderate discomfort during the first several days after surgery, which is generally well managed with prescribed medication. Pain steadily improves as healing progresses, and many patients find recovery easier than anticipated.

How long do tummy tuck results last?

Tummy tuck results are long lasting when supported by a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Over time, the natural aging process, future pregnancy, and significant weight fluctuations may affect your results.
