What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin, repositioning the nipple and areola, and tightening the underlying tissue to create a firmer, more youthful appearance. While a breast lift restores breast position and improves shape, it does not significantly increase or decrease breast volume.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, aging, and the natural loss of skin elasticity can all contribute to breast sagging over time. Several incision patterns are available, and Dr. Saber selects the technique that best matches your anatomy and degree of breast ptosis. If you also want to increase or decrease breast size, a breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation or breast reduction.

Benefits of a Breast Lift

A breast lift does more than raise the breasts. When thoughtfully planned, it can restore youthful shape, improve proportion, and enhance overall balance. Common benefits include:

  • A more youthful, lifted breast contour

  • Reduced sagging and improved projection

  • Repositioned nipples that no longer point downward

  • Reshaped or reduced areolas when appropriate

  • Improved breast symmetry

Are You a Candidate for a Breast Lift?

A consultation is the best way to determine whether a breast lift is right for you. Many patients are good candidates if they:

  • Have sagging breasts or nipples that sit at or below the breast crease

  • Are in good overall health and do not smoke, or are willing to stop before and after surgery

  • Have experienced loss of breast shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging

  • Are at or near a stable weight

  • Have realistic expectations about surgery, recovery, and scarring

  • Understand that future pregnancy or significant weight changes may affect long-term results

Why Choose Dr. Sepideh Saber?

Every breast lift should be tailored to the individual, making experience and thoughtful surgical planning just as important as the procedure itself.

Dr. Saber is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Her education and training include Stanford University, the University of Southern California, and NYU Langone Health, providing a strong foundation in both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery.

Her approach is never one size fits all. Every recommendation, from incision pattern to nipple position and breast reshaping technique, begins with an unhurried consultation to understand what you hope to achieve, followed by a careful evaluation of your anatomy, skin quality, lifestyle, and long-term goals. The goal is always the same: to create results that look beautiful, natural, and proportionate to your body.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery

Consultation and Cost

Your consultation includes:

  • A private discussion of your goals, breast shape, nipple position, skin quality, and overall proportions

  • A physical examination and individualized surgical recommendations

  • An opportunity to discuss incision options, expected results, recovery, and whether a lift alone will achieve your goals

  • Discussion of the surgical procedure, expected recovery, potential risks, and benefits

  • Recommendations for any preoperative testing or imaging when appropriate

  • Personalized pricing based on your surgical plan and anticipated surgical time

Procedure

Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation in our QUAD A-accredited surgical suite. Based on your anatomy and degree of breast sagging, excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is reshaped, and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful position. Every incision is carefully closed to promote optimal healing and help minimize visible scarring.

Recovery and Results

Most patients return to light daily activities within several days to one week. Temporary soreness, swelling, and tightness are expected and managed with prescribed medication. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Saber determines that healing is progressing appropriately. Although much of the swelling improves during the first several weeks, the breasts continue to settle as scars mature and the final shape develops over the following months.

Types of Breast Lift

Breast lift surgery is highly individualized. During your consultation, Dr. Saber will recommend the incision pattern that best fits your anatomy and degree of breast sagging.

  • Periareolar lift: A single incision around the areola, best suited for mild sagging

  • Vertical (lollipop) lift: An incision around the areola and vertically to the breast fold for moderate sagging
  • Wise pattern (anchor) lift: An incision around the areola, vertically to the breast fold, and along the breast crease to achieve the greatest degree of lifting for more significant sagging

Related Procedures

Many patients combine a breast lift with complementary procedures to achieve their desired result. Breast augmentation can restore fullness in addition to lifting the breasts, while breast reduction addresses excess breast volume and improves comfort. A breast lift is also commonly performed as part of a Mommy Makeover to restore the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Breast Lift FAQs

Face of a woman

Will a breast lift leave noticeable scars?

A breast lift does require incisions, and some scarring is unavoidable. Dr. Saber carefully places incisions where they can be concealed as much as possible, and most scars fade significantly over the first year as they mature.

Does a breast lift change my cup size?

A breast lift reshapes and raises the breasts but does not significantly change breast volume. If you would like to increase or decrease your breast size, a breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation or breast reduction.

How long do breast lift results last?

Breast lift results can last for many years, particularly when your weight remains stable. Although the natural aging process continues, maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can help preserve your results for as long as possible.

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

Most women are able to breastfeed after a breast lift, although it cannot be guaranteed. If future breastfeeding is important to you, Dr. Saber will take this into consideration when planning your procedure.

Should I wait until after pregnancy to have a breast lift?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can naturally change breast shape and may affect your long-term results. Many women choose to wait until they have finished having children, while others prefer to have surgery beforehand. This is a personal decision that can be discussed during your consultation.

Will my nipple sensation change?

Temporary changes in nipple sensation are common after breast lift surgery. For most patients, sensation gradually improves over the weeks to months following surgery, although permanent changes are possible.

Is a breast lift painful?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort after a breast lift, which is generally well managed with prescribed medication. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the recovery is.

Can a breast lift be revised later?

Although breast lift results are long lasting, changes related to aging, pregnancy, or significant weight fluctuations may occur over time. If needed, revision surgery can be performed to improve breast shape or position.
